Sedation Dentistry in San Francisco
Fear of the dentist shouldn’t mean living with tooth pain. Our sedation options let you receive the endodontic care you need—comfortably, safely, and without anxiety.
Dental Anxiety Is Real
You’re Not Alone—And You Don’t Have to White-Knuckle Through It
Studies estimate that dental anxiety affects roughly one in five adults. For many, the fear is significant enough to delay or avoid treatment altogether—allowing infections to worsen, pain to escalate, and teeth that could have been saved to reach a point of no return.
At Endodontic Arts of San Francisco, we believe that anxiety should never be a barrier to the care you need. That’s why we offer oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide—safe, proven sedation methods that let you relax completely during your procedure. You remain conscious and responsive, but calm. Many patients describe the experience as feeling like the appointment was over before it started.
Your Comfort Options
Sedation Methods We Offer
Oral Conscious Sedation
You’ll take a prescription sedative approximately one hour before your appointment. By the time treatment begins, you’ll be deeply relaxed—many patients drift off to sleep. You’ll remain conscious and responsive, but you’ll likely have little to no memory of the procedure afterward.
Note: A companion must drive you to and from your appointment. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day.
Nitrous Oxide
Commonly called “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose. You’ll feel calm and relaxed within minutes. Your endodontist can adjust the level of sedation throughout the procedure—increasing or decreasing as needed.
Advantage: Effects wear off within minutes after the mask is removed. You can drive yourself home and return to normal activity the same day.
In some cases, nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation can be combined for patients who need a deeper level of relaxation. During your consultation, Dr. Shuster will review your medical history, discuss your anxiety level, and recommend the sedation approach that’s right for you.
Is Sedation Right for You?
Sedation Dentistry May Be a Good Fit If You
Experience moderate to severe dental anxiety or a strong gag reflex; have had a negative dental experience in the past; need a complex or lengthy procedure and want to be completely comfortable; have difficulty getting numb with local anesthesia alone; or simply want a calmer, more relaxed treatment experience.
Sedation is not a substitute for local anesthesia—it works alongside it. Your tooth and surrounding tissue will still be fully numbed before any treatment begins. Sedation simply ensures that the rest of you is relaxed too.
