Oral Conscious Sedation
One small pill. Complete relaxation. No needles, no IV—just a calm, comfortable appointment where you may not remember a thing.
How Oral Conscious Sedation Works
Oral conscious sedation uses a prescription medication—typically a benzodiazepine such as triazolam (Halcion)—taken by mouth approximately one hour before your procedure. By the time you arrive at our office, the medication has taken effect: you’ll feel deeply relaxed, drowsy, and free from anxiety.
You remain conscious throughout treatment—you can respond to questions and follow instructions—but you’ll be in a state of profound calm. Many patients describe the feeling as being on the edge of sleep. One of the most appreciated effects is the amnesic property: most patients have little or no memory of the procedure afterward. For people who have avoided dental care for years due to anxiety, this can be genuinely life-changing.
Your endodontist will monitor your vital signs throughout the appointment to ensure your safety and comfort at every stage.
What to Expect
Before Your Appointment
You’ll receive a prescription for your sedative medication at your consultation visit. Take the medication at the time specified by your endodontist—usually about one hour before your scheduled appointment. Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before (or as directed). Arrange for a companion to drive you to and from the office.
During Treatment
Once the sedative has taken full effect, your endodontist will administer local anesthesia to numb the treatment area—you likely won’t notice this happening. Your vital signs are monitored continuously. You’re conscious and breathing on your own, but deeply relaxed.
After Treatment
The sedative effects gradually wear off over several hours. Your companion will drive you home. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day—avoid driving, operating machinery, making important decisions, or consuming alcohol for 24 hours.
Is Oral Conscious Sedation Safe?
Yes. Oral conscious sedation has been used safely in dentistry for decades. The medications are well-studied, the dosages are carefully calculated based on your weight and medical history, and your vital signs are monitored throughout the procedure. Because you remain conscious and maintain your own airway and protective reflexes, the safety profile is excellent.
Our endodontists are certified in administering oral conscious sedation and will review your full medical history and current medications before prescribing. Certain conditions and medications may require adjustments or alternative sedation approaches—this will all be discussed at your consultation.
