Emergency Root Canal in San Francisco
Severe tooth pain doesn’t wait—and neither should your treatment. Our endodontists provide same-day emergency root canal care at two San Francisco locations.
When Pain Won’t Wait
Signs You Need an Emergency Root Canal
A tooth that’s been quietly developing an infection can escalate suddenly—waking you at 2 a.m. with throbbing pain that no amount of ibuprofen can quiet, or announcing itself with swelling that spreads into your jaw. These aren’t symptoms to monitor. They’re signals that the nerve inside your tooth is compromised and needs treatment now.
An emergency root canal is the same procedure as a planned root canal—the infected or inflamed pulp tissue is removed, the canals are cleaned and shaped, and the tooth is sealed. The difference is urgency. Delaying treatment risks the infection spreading to surrounding bone, the development of a dental abscess, or—in serious cases—a systemic infection that affects your overall health.
Call Us Immediately If You Experience
Severe, Persistent Pain
Throbbing, spontaneous tooth pain that keeps you awake or doesn’t respond to over-the-counter pain medication—especially pain that worsens when lying down.
Swelling or Abscess
Visible swelling in the gum, cheek, or jaw, or a pimple-like bump (fistula) on the gums near a tooth. These indicate active infection that requires urgent treatment.
Lingering Sensitivity
Sharp pain to hot or cold that persists long after the stimulus is removed. Brief sensitivity is common—lingering pain signals nerve damage inside the tooth.
Pain on Biting
Acute pain when chewing or applying any pressure to a specific tooth. This often indicates infection at the root tip or a crack extending into the pulp.
Tooth Darkening
A tooth that has noticeably darkened or changed color compared to neighboring teeth, which can indicate pulp necrosis—the nerve tissue inside the tooth has died.
Dental Trauma
A tooth that has been knocked loose, displaced, or fractured from a blow to the face or accident. Time is critical—early intervention dramatically improves the chance of saving the tooth.
Specialist Advantage
Why an Endodontist for Your Emergency
When you’re in pain, you want relief—fast. An endodontist is a dentist who has completed an additional two to three years of specialized residency training focused exclusively on diagnosing tooth pain and saving teeth through root canal treatment. At Endodontic Arts of San Francisco, Dr. Shuster, Dr. Ko, and Dr. Patel perform root canals every day. That volume of focused experience translates directly into faster, more precise emergency care.
Our emergency patients benefit from in-office CBCT 3D imaging that reveals the full anatomy of the infected tooth in seconds, dental operating microscopes that provide up to 25× magnification for unparalleled precision, and sedation options for patients whose anxiety is compounded by the urgency of their situation.
The result: accurate diagnosis, effective pain relief—often within the first appointment—and a root canal completed to the highest standard even under emergency conditions.
Before You Arrive
What to Do While You’re Waiting
If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, call our office first—we’ll get you in as quickly as possible. In the meantime:
Take ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) if it’s safe for you—it reduces both pain and inflammation. Follow package dosing instructions. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum.
Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek near the affected area—20 minutes on, 20 minutes off.
Avoid chewing on the affected side and skip hot, cold, or sugary foods and drinks that could aggravate the pain.
Keep your head elevated if lying down—propping yourself up reduces blood pressure to the area and can lessen throbbing.
Common Questions
Emergency Root Canal FAQ
How quickly can I be seen for an emergency?
We reserve time specifically for emergency patients and can typically see you the same day you call. For the fastest scheduling, call our office directly rather than submitting an online request.
Do I need a referral from my dentist for an emergency?
No. While many patients are referred to us by their general dentist, you do not need a referral to schedule an emergency appointment. We’ll coordinate with your dentist after your emergency is addressed.
Will the emergency root canal hurt?
No. The procedure itself is performed under local anesthesia, and most patients report that the pain they experienced before treatment was far worse than anything they felt during the procedure. We also offer sedation options for patients with dental anxiety.
What happens if I don’t get an emergency root canal?
An untreated tooth infection will not resolve on its own. Without treatment, the infection can spread to surrounding bone and tissue, form an abscess, and in serious cases lead to a systemic infection. Delayed treatment also increases the likelihood that the tooth cannot be saved.
